How to Choose the Right Wedding Videographer for Your Style?

Filed in Wedding Tips  /  March 21, 2025 /

Wedding videography is an essential part of preserving your wedding memories, capturing the emotion, movement, and sound that photography alone cannot. Choosing the right wedding videographer is just as important as choosing your photographer. Here’s how to ensure you book a professional who fits your vision and style.

1. Identify Your Preferred Videography Style

Just like photography, wedding videography comes in different styles. Understanding which one aligns with your vision will help you narrow down your search.

  • Cinematic: A highly edited, artistic film that feels like a Hollywood movie trailer. It typically includes slow-motion shots, drone footage, and carefully curated music to create an emotional storytelling experience.
  • Documentary: This style captures the entire day in chronological order with minimal editing. It focuses on raw, authentic moments, preserving the wedding as it happened. Documentary styles typically have more “handheld” shots throughout the day that give it a more human feel.
  • Story-Driven: A blend of both cinematic and documentary styles, this type of video can include interviews, voiceovers, and behind-the-scenes moments for a personal, emotional touch.
  • Highlight Films: A short, 3-5 minute film showcasing the best moments of your wedding day, often set to music. Ideal for couples who want a shareable, visually stunning recap of their celebration.

2. Review Full Wedding Videos

Just as you would review full wedding photo galleries, watching an entire wedding video (not just a highlight reel) is crucial. A skilled wedding videographer will have consistent quality from start to finish, seamless editing, clear audio, and natural transitions between key moments.

3. Understand Audio and Editing Styles

Clear, high-quality audio is just as important as stunning visuals. Poor sound quality can ruin a wedding film. Ask your videographer:

  • How they capture vows and speeches (lapel mics, shotgun mics, etc.). For the best result, you really want them to use WIRED lapel mic’s for things like your vows. We always have a wired mic hidden on both the bride and groom to capture the best possible audio.
  • Whether they use professional sound equipment to eliminate background noise.
  • If they offer voiceover options for storytelling. (we do)
  • How they incorporate music and whether you can choose your soundtrack. Typically, if a videographer has you choose the music for your wedding highlight film, they aren’t putting much work into the story of your video. We choose all of the music and audio for your highlight film, to make sure everything blends seamlessly and helps you truly re-live your wedding day.

Choosing a wedding videographer who understands your style, values professional-quality sound, and provides a seamless editing experience will ensure your wedding video is a cherished keepsake for years to come.
